HIROHARU KAWANAKA received a Dr. Eng. degree from Mie University Graduate School of Engineering in 2004. After graduation, he entered Mie University Graduate School of Medicine to study Medical Informatics and Medical/Clinical Information Systems. In 2004, he established a company, “Medical Engineering Institute, Inc.” to develop a DWH for clinical use. More than 120 large-scale hospitals use our system to analyze clinical data archived in the EHR for clinical studies and business analyses. He worked for this company as a director from 2004 to 2021. In 2005, he was selected NEDO Industry Fellowship Program and worked for Mie Technical License Organization to support research collaborations and start-up companies. In 2006, he joined Mie University Graduate School of Engineering as an assistant professor. He received a Ph.D. in Medical Science from Mie University in 2009. He was a visiting researcher at Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center in 2012. He worked as an associate professor from 2017 to 2023 and is now a full professor at Mie University. From 2018 to 2013, he worked for Mie University Career Support Center as an Assistant to the president. From 2017 to 2021, he also worked as a visiting associate professor for Suzuka University of Medical Science, Japan. He is now a full professor at Mie University Graduate School of Engineering. His current research topics are medical informatics, medical imaging, image recognition, welfare information systems, ergonomics, evolutionary computations, and their application. He is a member of IEEE (and SMC Society), HIMSS, and some Japanese academic societies.
